Working Principle of Internal Gear Pump
The internal gear pump has two gears, namely, a larger internal gear (rotor) and a smaller external gear (idler). The internal gear is off set and rotates inside the external gear. As the gears turn, fluid is sucked into the gaps between the gear teeth and the casing. This trapped fluid is then passed from the inlet side of the pump to the outlet side.
A crescent-shaped seal (crescent spacer) between the two gears avoids the backflow of fluids to the outlet section. When the gears mesh on the discharge side, it forces the fluid out with pressure. This simple mechanism provides for continuous, smooth, and low-pulsation flow, and the internal gear pump is therefore suitable for precision hydraulic applications.
